Theisis - Model-based development of electrified drill rigs

Are you ready?

Do you want to help us speed up the shift towards a more sustainable mining and construction industry? By doing your thesis in collaboration with Epiroc you will get the chance to be a part of this journey.
You will work together with experienced and helpful colleagues in an atmosphere characterized by creativity, innovation, and workplace diversity. In your specific project you have the chance to be a part of a challenging and educational experience while growing both professionally and personally.

Education background:
Mechanical engineering/ Mechatronics/ Electrical engineering/ Applied physics

Level of thesis project:
Master Thesis.

Number of students in the project:
Preferably two students

Target:
We are looking for individuals to help build the foundation for model-based systems engineering of drill rigs by developing simulation models. The models will build on the hydraulic design and load application on a Surface drill rig and will be validated against physical tests. The goal is to explore optimization possibilities through electrification.

Background:
As electrification and digitalization increase, so does the complexity of machinery. This growing complexity makes model-based system simulations highly relevant, both in product development and system analysis. Well-established model libraries allow for virtual prototyping of new system configurations, while also helping to analyze existing systems, enabling better decision-making in the early stages of projects. Informed decisions save both time and costs and can significantly enhance system performance.

Mission:
Your mission will be to develop, evaluate, and utilize simulation models of the hydraulic or electric systems, and the loads on a surface drill rig. A suitable model fidelity should be selected for use in the early concept phases to meet the project’s early-stage requirements. The project will be deemed successful when the developed models have been validated against real test data and used to assess various electrification options.

Qualifications:
We are seeking applicants with strong knowledge of hydraulic and/or electric power systems, with a keen interest in system architecture and optimization. Experience with software such as Hopsan, Simscape, or similar hydraulic/electric system simulation tools, and Simulink for control system simulation, is highly advantageous.

How to apply:
Does this sound interesting, and do you feel this is a match?

Log in to the recruitment system. If you are new to the system, you need to start by making a profile. Do not forget to attach your CV and a short letter about your-self, describing why you are applying for this thesis. Please note that we do not accept applications via email. In this process, we review applications continuously and the project can be filled before last day of application. We recommend to send your application in as soon possible, but no later than February 28.
